Papieren glimlach.
Hoofdstuk 4
‘Bill?’ Roept een bekende stem. Ik kijk om, en zie hoe Tom de hoek om komt rennen. Op zijn verwarde gezicht komt meteen een glimlach tevoorschijn.
‘I want to know everything.’ Knipoogt hij naar Bill.
‘Okay, I’ll tell you. This is Roos. Her parents don’t want her to go to our performances, but I do. So we’re going to take her there.’
Toms gezichtsuitdrukking veranderd weer, hij staat nu verbaasd.
‘Okay, which performances, and do you think we’re going to get her there?’
‘Dortmund and Nijmegen, and I haven’t actually thought about the other answer.’
Tom glimlacht weer, en loopt weg.
‘What is he going to do now?’
‘Telling Gustav and Georg that I’m in love.’
‘Are you?’ Aan zijn gezicht kan ik zien dat hij die vraag niet verwachtte.
‘I don’t know. I only know you for like, a few minutes, you know. But you have to know I’m not like my brother, so I don’t just kiss just anyone.’ Hij ziet eruit alsof hij betrapt is, en ik krijg het idee dat hij zich niet erg prettig voelt. De stilte krijgt gelukkig geen kans om de gang te overheersen, want mijn ouders stormen binnen. Zodra ze me zien schreeuwen ze naar me: ‘Roos! Je bent nu al ruim een uur op de wc!’ Dan zien ze Bill. Hun monden vallen open, maar niet eens van verbazing. Meer van afschuw. Ik kan zien dat ze worstelen met hun emoties, dus ik grijp mijn kans:
‘Mam! Pap! Bill gaat zorgen dat ik morgen en overmorgen naar de concerten kan!’ Ze willen het verbieden, ik zie het in hun ogen. Maar ze doen het niet. Ze kunnen het niet.
‘We zijn overmorgen niet op tijd in Nederland, en we kunnen je morgen niet naar Dortmund brengen.’ Doet mijn vader nog een poging. Bill kijkt me vragend aan.
‘We’re not back on time the day after tomorrow, and my parents can’t bring me tomorrow.’
‘Then you come with us.’ Zegt Bill. Mijn ouders kijken me op hun beurt weer zwijgend aan. Helemaal vergeten, die spreken geen Engels. ‘Ik ga met Bill mee.’ Grijns ik naar ze. Ze knikken en lopen terug het restaurant in.
‘You should go with them. Give me your address, and I’ll come get you and your stuff this afternoon. And you can stay with us for the rest of the weekend.’
Bill vist een papiertje uit zijn broekzak, en tovert ook een pen tevoorschijn. Ik ren het restaurant in, en laat mijn ouders ons adres opschrijven. Ik loop terug naar de gang waar Bill zat, half om half verwachtend dat hij weg is. Hij pakt het briefje aan.
‘Are you sure that your parents wrote down the right address?’
‘Yes, I am.’
‘Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow then.’
‘Bill, can I ask you one more question?’
‘Ofcourse you can.’
‘Can you do something for me?’
‘Sure I can.’
‘Hit me.’
Hij staart me verbaasd aan.
‘Why?’ Vraagt hij ontzet.
‘Because I think I’m dreaming.’
‘Can’t I just promise you you’re not?’
‘Yes, you can. But I won’t believe you anyway.’
‘Don’t you trust me?’
‘I trust you, but I don’t trust myself, nor my mind. If I’m dreaming, you’re not Bill, but some image in my mind.’
‘But what if your mind pretends I’m hitting you, while I’m not?’
‘Don’t make it too complicated, please.’
‘I’m just not going to hurt you.’
‘It would be less painful than finding out all this was a dream, as soon as I wake up.’
‘I’m not going to hit you.’
‘I’ll hit myself.’
‘No, you won’t.’
‘You can’t stop me.’
‘Sure I can.’
‘Try.’ Glimlach ik.
‘It’s very easy. If you hurt yourself, I won’t come to get you this afternoon, and you’ll just have to stay in Germany with angry parents.’
‘Would you seriously do that?’
‘It’s the only way to stop you.’
‘Alright, I’ll be a nice girl.’
‘Great, see you this afternoon!’ Glimlacht hij, en hij duwt me het restaurant in, waarna hij zelf terug loopt naar zijn band.
